If the world is round, why is everything "dry flat"?

Seriously, I am hard pressed these days to find a garment that does not come with the care instructions reshape and "dry flat" or more pretentiously "lay flat to dry". That's really all I have to say. I mean, of course I will dry flat. On my budget I have to make my clothes last as long as possible but there are days when even my industrial, jungle gym-sized drying rack, complete with a dry flat hammock, cries, "No more!". Ugh and double ugh. Tumble kvetch as needed.
